Soldiers' Special Sunday's Refinement & The Future

What’s rocking? I think it's time to do a little spring cleaning!

Usually I have a no “zero-day” policy when it comes to my work ethic, but I make an exception on major achievement days such as 0.3.0’s procedural generation update. (Give the demo a download to see that and more!)

What I usually do on these days I don’t work is heavily plan for this project’s future, so I guess it isn’t much of a “zero-day” to begin with. When I’m not working on Soldiers’ Descent in any workspace, I have my design doc or schedule open to get my bearings. More specifically, I spent yesterday researching instrument plugins for the soundtrack. Major version changes disorient me which is why last devlog I did not announce my plans for this week (still give it a read). This is especially true since the glide path is almost entirely finished, yet I want to keep pushing out content while working on the final demo without spoiling anything in the story.

With that being said, this Sunday is going to be a Quality-Of-Life release for bugfixes, feature improvements, etc. while I plan for the following weeks’ updates. This will also give me more time to compose more music, finalize the combat music, and edit my rough draft for the demo’s story exposition. It’s like a small update in preparation for bigger stuff! I know for a fact I want to adjust some factors to make the tech demo more enjoyable from a player-perspective because it’s been tested on the developer side of things (basically balancing changes to near the final product).

Here’s what to expect on Sunday!

  • Proper settings menu!
    • Volume, resolution, fullscreen options
    • Maybe a 480p or 4:3 aspect ratio mode for that authentic retro experience
  • Signs to help guide what is what
  • An interact indicator to show what is interactable
  • Transition sounds between scenes
  • More cinematic cameras in combat
  • More refined turn-based combat
  • Bugfixes (of course ;) but ones I’ve been taking notes of)
  • Code cleanup to speed up production
  • Rebalancing
    • Stat changes
    • Drop rates
    • Dungeon floor sizes
  • A new roadmap! It’s not just gameplay stuff this time around, but there are also many assets, redesigns, and more!
